Reveling in the moment for the Hogs and Wolves
Posted Thursday, September 4, at 11:03 AM
Two former professional football coaches, following coaches who had not met the fan's expectations and connected with the state of Arkansas, will never forget the game their respective teams played last Saturday night. I'm of course talking about Steve Roberts and Bobby Petrino.

The former led his Red Wolves as they christened a new name and new era with a type of win all but alien to ASU fans…….a big time win over a big time name, Texas A&M.

Petrino, on the other hand, took a big time program which had been, with relative success, ensconced in a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust philosophy for at least the past two decades and gave them permission to fly…..and fly they did.

The two wins had some similarities---Both teams had to come back from deficits to record their wins: ASU was down by 11 points at the half and Arkansas had to score two Tds in the final eight minutes to gain their victory. Both teams were playing in games which were supposed to be lopsided: for Arkansas and Against ASU. Both teams had senior quarterbacks who took charge to lead their respective teams to victory.

The differences in the two wins are too numerous to list, but one difference which does which does jump out at me is what the two teams' fans expectations are now.

For the Wolves, the fan's expectations probably largely fall into four categories:

Overly optimistic- "Bring on Bama, they ain't nothing'."

Cautiously optimistic- "I can see eight, maybe nine wins. All of them are possible, but the Tide and Tigers. Memphis will be out for revenge after last year."

Cautiously pessimistic- "It was a great win, but we'll probably come down to earth pretty quick. I just hope we can break even."

Overly pessimistic-"Evan a gorilla can write his name if you give him enough pencils, paper and time. Pure luck and the odds of a big win finally falling their way nothing more. Besides, that team in College Station Saturday night wasn't the A&M I remember."

For the Hogs, the thinking is about in the same categories, I guess:

Overly optimistic- "Did you see that comeback? And Casey Dick, man, Nutt was a nut to never let him pass--or even run."

Cautiously optimistic- "At least we have another week to work things out before we have to go down to Austin. But then there's Bama and Florida and Aub……oh man."

Cautiously pessimistic- "If we can just get to the Kentucky game now worse than 2-4 we might be able to get another four wins and get to a bowl game. But, I don't know."

Overly pessimistic- "Anybody got Danny Ford's number? How about Jack Crowe?"

You know, that's the bad thing about sports, even after a win, you've only got a few minutes to revel in a victory before you have to start getting prepared for the next game and match. And at the end of the season, no matter what sport, there's only one set of fans who are really happy.

But, that's life, I guess. I also guess that that's why the old refrain of "Wait'll next year" will never die. Whether it's sports, politics or life in general, there's always hope, at least in the minds of some.

But, as usual, that's just my opinion this week, for what it's worth.

Brawner vs WIS
Posted Friday, August 29, at 10:27 AM

What-if-sports (WIS) is a website I found a couple of years ago. It has football, baseball, NASCAR, etc simulations on it. It takes fantasy sports one step further in that a person not only selects his team, but manipulates the offering of scholarships, training, practice, line-up, etc...

Out on a limb--part 2 the Red Wolves
Posted Thursday, August 14, at 10:20 AM

A couple of weeks ago I put out my predictions for the Hogs. This week I give you my predictions for the Ind...excuse me, Red Wolves. As with the Razorbacks, I make no guarantee of accuracy. However, if my prognosticating skills prove to be over the top, remember you heard it from me first. Regardless, here goes:...

Keep whistlin' Dixie
Posted Thursday, August 7, at 9:39 AM

Well, Monday the new battles began throughout the country for supremacy in both college and high school football. On the somewhat local scene, the Hogs have a new coach, ASU has a new name, the Indians, Warriors and Wildcats have enough new faces to require a program...

No local predictions here
Posted Thursday, July 31, at 10:21 AM

I had a couple of people in the past ask me why I don't make predictions of the Indians, Warriors and Wildcats like I do the Hogs at the beginning of the season. My basic answer to this is to respond with something to the effect that I would just as soon prefer needles to be poked in my eyes rather than to have to endure the repercussions of predicting anything other that an undefeated season for any of the local teams...

Out on a limb again
Posted Friday, July 25, at 9:19 AM

I know it's still early, but with a new season coming up when we will be looking at a new coach and (likely) a whole new look to the Razorbacks, I can't help but go ahead an make my early season predictions. Now keep in mind that these predictions in the past have been notoriously incorrect (think the Chicago Tribune headline-Dewey defeats Truman). Nevertheless, like an habitual gambler, I keep coming back for more so here goes:...

Old-timers reign forever

My 40th high school reunion is coming up this year. I'm 58 years old, have arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, a bad shoulder, two bad hips and a failing memory. Yesterday I was 38 and didn't have these problems, but in the intervening 20 years life occurred...

The doping will continue at Beijing
Posted Thursday, July 10, at 10:51 AM

For the younger people around (under 25 or so, that is) there was a time when the Olympics were used as a political tool even more than they are now. The time I'm talking about was from the mid 70's to the late 80's. The USSR had always used the sporting event as a tool to show how powerful communism and the communist way of life was. Their goal, of course, was to turn everyone and every country they possibly could into a "comrade" for the good ole hammer and sickle...

Another positive mark for sports
Posted Thursday, June 26, at 8:27 AM

In the Superboy comic books of nearly five decades ago, I would read of the Man of Steel as a boy and wonder why the writers never had him playing high school football or baseball or any sport. Then when I would read the Superman comics, I would imagine what it would be like for the son of Krypton to play for the Razorbacks, Packers, Yankees or Celtics...

Criticism of Patrick unfair
Posted Thursday, May 29, at 10:13 AM

Danica Patrick is getting a lot of flack for her show of temper. Oh, in case you didn't know, she was one of three women competing in the Indy 500 race Sunday. She was one of the few women to have such an honor and, in my opinion, the only one to have ever had a real shot at winning the race...
