A couple of weeks ago I put out my predictions for the Hogs. This week I give you my predictions for the Ind...excuse me, Red Wolves. As with the Razorbacks, I make no guarantee of accuracy. However, if my prognosticating skills prove to be over the top, remember you heard it from me first. Regardless, here goes:
Aug. 30 -- Texas A&M 31, ASU 7 -- Unlike with the Texas game last year in which ASU gave the Longhorns all they could handle, the Aggies are up for the opener and shut the Red Wolves down in the last three quarters following a 65-yard screen pass from Corey Leonard to Reggie Arnold ties the game 7-7 at the end of the first period. Record 0-0, 0-1 Sept. 6 -- ASU 28, Texas Southern 7 -- The Wolves howl as they have little problem with the Tigers. Arnold and Danny McNeal combine for 285 rushing yards and three TDs while Leonard passes for 252 and one score. Record 0-0, 1-1 Sept. 13 -- ASU 14, Southern Mississippi 10 -- ASU avenges last season's loss to the Golden Eagles as Brian Tompkins scores with less than two minutes left on a 23-yard Leonard pass. Record 0-0, 2-1 Sept. 20 -- ASU 17, Middle Tennessee 6 -- For the second week in a row, the K9s win over a team which handed them a loss last season. The ASU defense rises to the occasion as they hold the Blue Raiders scoreless for three quarters while Leonard, Arnold and company go up 17-0 on way to their third win and first conference victory of the year. Record 1-0, 3-1 Sept. 27 -- ASU 6, Memphis 3 -- After waiting for a year for vengeance, the Tigers can only muster a single field goal against a suddenly animalistic Wolves defense which limits them to just 125 yards total offense. With no rain in sight, ASU doubles Memphis' score on two Josh Arauco field goals in the first and fourth quarters securing the win. Record 0-0, 4-1. Oct. 11 -- ASU 10, Louisiana-Monroe 7 -- All of Jonesboro is abuzz as the Red Wolves gain their fifth win in a row over a game Warhawk team and get mention in the national polls. Leonard is chosen as Sun-Belt offensive player of the week in the second conference win of the year. Record 2-0, 5-1 Oct. 18 -- ASU 21, Louisiana-Lafayette 0 -- Not since the days of Bennie Ellender and Larry Lacewell has the ASU faithful been riding so high. The howls are heard into the night as the Red Wolves mangle the Cajuns and move into the 24th spot on the USA today poll. Record 3-0, 6-1 Nov. 1 -- Alabama 31, ASU 10 -- ESPN2 chronicles the Wolves' second loss of the season to the 5-3 Crimson Tide. The final score is not indicative of the game as ASU carries Bama into the final period down by just 17-10 before the crowd carries the pacaderms to a 14-point final period. They become bowl eligible, but the loss drops them out of the polls. Record 3-0, 6-2 Nov. 8 -- ASU 24, Florida-International 14 -- ASU remains at the top of the Sun Belt and on track for a showdown with undefeated Troy as they recover from the Alabama loss with a solid win over the Golden Panthers. The win puts them back in the polls at 25. Record 4-0, 7-2 Nov. 22 -- ASU 38, Florida-Atlantic 31 -- The Wolves return for their final home game of the year as an estimated 50,000 people crowd in and around Red Wolves Stadium. ASU doesn't disappoint as they fall behind 31-24 at the end of the third period. Leonard engineers two successive drives in the final period to secure a win and a guarantee of a bowl game. Record 5-0, 8-2 Nov. 29 -- North Texas 17, ASU 7 -- The Mean Green prove to be just that as they hold the Wolves to 175 yards in total offense and play their best offensive game of the year against the 20th ranked Wolves. The loss means ASU will meet the undefeated in conference Trojans for a share of the Sun Belt championship. Record 5-1, 8-3 Dec. 6 -- ASU 24, Troy 21 -- On ESPN2 once again, the Red Wolves and Trojans battle like heavyweights one-upping each other in a game begging to be put on highlight reels. Ben Owens and Brian Flagg head up a four down, goal line stand from the three yard line to save the game with 00:00 showing on the clock. The win puts the Wolves in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl as co-champion of the Sun Belt. Record 6-1, 9-3 Dec 21 -- ASU 58, Tulsa 51 -- The Wolves have their most prolific offensive show of the year as they go toe to toe with the Conference USA champion Golden Hurricanes. Both defenses gamely try to stop the avalanche of points, but the game is all offense in what turns out to be one of the highest scoring and most exciting bowls of the year. The final polls have the Red Wolves at 22 in the nation. Record 7-1, 10-3 So there it is. Am I dreaming? Some would say so. Could it happen? Of course. Will it happen? Wait and see. Anyway, that's my opinion this week, for what it's worth. |
