In the Journalism world there are several things that you try your best to avoid: religion and politics are the main ones. Well, I'm going to vent a little here and write about politics. However, the wonderful thing about blogs is they are electronic and can be erased as simple as pressing the "delete" key. So, if, and I sincerely hope this doesn't happen, only observing the possibility that I may offend people or cause an uproar, I can delete this blog. Before I start, let me make clear that as Americans we have the right to voice our opinions and respect one another's. I hope you respect mine and no offense intended.

Now, with that in mind. I know, you're thinking, "No, Dustin, don't do this!" Trust me, I just said that as a precaution. It won't be bad.

As we all know by now, we have a new president resulting from America's most controversial election in America's history, President Barak Obama.

This has affected our schools dramatically. I went to school today surrounded by racist comments and even on the internet, racial offenses were made. Some said, "We're going to be in top class now and you're in bottom class." Or the most absurd, "All white people report to the nearest cotton field for orientation."

Ask the majority (key word majority) of the young people that were advocates for Obama why they wanted him and you will get "Because he's black, duh!" or my personal favorite, "because he is a good speaker."

I'm sad to say, that it's not only from our fellow students that we have a newfound racism, but also a teacher is making racial slanders. The teachers are our role models and we look up to them. And we catch racism from them too?

It is sad that this one man has created such chaos in schools and between friends, brothers, sisters, and fellow students and teachers. What has this nation become? What happened to "one nation under God?"

I will leave with this note: May God bless America and shed his grace on thee and mend the ever widening crack that will soon be the death of a nation.

I ask that if you do comment, please be respectful and respect one another's opinions. Thank you and God bless America!

Excitement from our youth sometimes can broadcast mixed signals and the natural angst of teenagers may be what you are hearing from your schoolmates. We must see our newly elected official as just that, a man assuming the job as president. We also must see him as a man...a mere mortal. Franklin Roosevelt was not seen as a "cripple" was he? Was Abraham Lincoln seen as an atheist? The answer is no. Both men were seen as just that, men.

In addition, your comment:

"I'm sad to say, that it's not only from our fellow students that we have a newfound racism, but also the teachers. The teachers are our idols and we look up to them. And we catch racism from them too?"

...is quite offensive. You must keep in mind the word "teachers" is plural and your message conveys the notion that you witnessed this from more than one, IF NOT ALL your teachers. This message gets broadcasted to the community and sheds a negative light on our school's staff. In any example you cannot make bold generalizations because they can always be proven wrong. Also, try to view your teachers as role models, not idols.

Just an opinion...

Thank You for your comment and I rezpect your opinion. I do like to hear the other side. And you are correct about using the plural word of teachers. I do apolgize for insulting the image of the teachers in general. I will change that. Thank you for commenting and keeping it respectful.

why would anyone that is an educator even consider presenting any kind of racial slander? we are an educated society and america is made up of people of all ethnic backgrounds. just because someone looks black or white does not mean they are.many blacks and whites alike are mixed with native americans

Oliver,

Thank you for your comment. I must say, you make a good point. Which was why I was so shocked at the slander.

One quick note, personally I think politics should be stripped from schools. if we cannot pray in school, then we should not be allowed to boast political t-shirts, flyers, etc.

Just an opinion and once again, that you for being respectful.

Dustin, please be patient with your classmates as they are very excited about the first African American elected as President of the these great United States. Give it a couple weeks or month and they will come to the realization that we do not elect dictators, we elect good hard working honest ( for the most part ) fellow Americans. I hear the same old racist remarks here at work and I just smile and go on about my business. As for the teachers remark, how sad that person could not contain themselves until they were away from you students. Keep the faith that America will be as strong in the coming years as it has been in the past. Say a little prayer for those we would belittle our new President, for they are truly the losers in this election cycle.

Thanks Uncle Louis,

I was hoping that it was just the excitement of them finally having an African American president. I mean, put yourself in their shoes, I would be excited and all, but I don't think I would say the things they said. But yes, I would be excited, too. After all Obama is the first "black" president. That says a lot for where they have come and where they are.

This leds me to another point. I at one point, meaning two days ago, in no way wanted Obama as a president. Then I got to reading some comments from my black peers, some made me mad then some where an eye opener. Even though we may not like Obama, we have to stay together, no matter what race. We must stay united. I do not agree with Obama and a lot of things, like partial abortion, but I do think he does have good plans for the undoing of some of Bush's mess-ups. So, let's stay united and wait and see what happens.
