He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He moved to Pine Bluff in 1972, where he owned and operated Buck's Barber Shop for 18 years. He then worked for Jefferson Electric for 20 years. He was a Baptist and member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria B. Dollar Franks (married August 15, 1955 in Hernando, Mississippi); son, John L. Franks, III of Pine Bluff; two daughters, Judy Ross and her husband Jimmy of Yorktown, Virginia, Deborah Olivier and her husband Hubert of Kaplan, Louisiana; brother, Jimmy Carol Franks of Wilson; sister, Patsy Long of Lepanto; six grandchildren, Jimmy, Bubba, Jerret, Amanda, Christina and Lee; and seven great-grandchildren, Ayla, Dylon, Christian, Jimmy III, Madison, FaithAnn and Kaleb.
