Jonnie Carroll

Jonnie Carroll, 92, of Memphis, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at her residence.

Born in Holly Springs, Miss., she grew up in Lepanto and at age 17 left for Memphis and then Chicago. During the early 1930's, she was a vocalist and sang on a Memphis riverboat, at the famous Chicago Blackhawk Restaurant, and on Chicago's WGN radio station for over two years with the Joe Sanders orchestra. She attended jam sessions with Fats Domino, Ozzie & Harriett Nelson, and Duke Ellington.

After meeting podiatry med student John Carroll, they married in 1934. She was an avid golfer and active in Little League, Boy Scouts, Red Cross, local PTA, and one time Legislative Chairman of the National PTA.

After 22 years, she retired in September 1979 from assistant manager at Talman Credit Union. She retired with her husband to Duck Hill, Miss., and moved to Memphis after her husband died. They were married for 54 years.

Jonnie was preceded in death by her husband, John Carroll; mother, Golie May Gill Henderson; father, John Austin Henderson; brothers, Rivers Henderson and Claiborne Henderson; sisters, Julia Cox, Lucille Colston, Irene Forrey, Tony Poreria, Juanita Leonino.

She is survived by her son, Donald Carroll and wife, Judy, of Homer Glen, IL, son Ronald Carrol, of Holmes, PA, daughter (adopted granddaughter) Kim Skinner and husband, David, of Grand Junction, TN; great-grandson Austin Skinner, of Grand Junction, TN; and sister, Frances Jones, of Lepanto.

A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 22 at the Duck Hill Cemetery in Dull Hill, Miss., with the Reverend William Pennington officiating. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The LA Grange School.
