"Picture man" Rogers dies at age 86

Marked Tree is mourning the loss of native "picture man" Edward Lee Rogers. He died Sunday, Jan. 6 at his residence in Marked Tree. He was 86 years old.

He was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Marked Tree and was a life-long resident. He was of the Methodist faith and worked at various jobs during his younger years including the soda fountain at Nyal Drug Store. He owned a taxi service and also delivered ice and wood to local residents.

Rogers was an All-State athlete in both basketball and football for Marked tree High School from which he graduated in 1940. Having umpired basketball and football for 25 years, he was known statewide as a sports official.

He served in active duty for the U.S. Army in the engineering division serving in England and Germany.

He was known as "hardhead" for many reasons best left to your own thoughts, but was known as "candy man" because he delivered candy for Curtis Candy Company.

A local photographer for 50 years, he took school photos, senior portraits, wedding pictures and beauty pageant pictures. This earned him the new nickname of "picture man."

Rogers is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Stricklin; two sons, Ronny Rogers and wife Ellen of West Memphis and Don Rogers and wife Mitos of Woodstock, Ga.; one daughter, Connee Rogers Orr or Richland, N.C.; five grandsons, Lex Orr, Nic Orr, Craig Rogers, Chad Rogers and Josh Rogers; and eight great-grandchildren, Matthew Orr, Alex Orr, Koryn Orr, Connor Rogers, Carson Rogers, Collyn Rogers, Chandler Rogers and Claire Rogers.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Murphy Funeral Home in Marked Tree with Bro. Joe Sparks and Bro. Ron Williams officiating.

Active pallbearers will be Craig Rogers, Nicholas Orr, Chad Rogers, Joshua Rogers, Randy Shinabery and George Willoughby.

Lex Orr, grandson of Mr. Rogers, will serve as honorary pallbearer. He is serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Harry Trumann and will be unable to attend the funeral.

Burial followed in Marked Tree Cemetery under the direction of Murphy Funeral Home.
