Like for example, the two deaths that took place in public swimming pools in Memphis on Saturday. Cameron Hogg, 13 years old, drowned at Pine Hill pool in South Memphis and Demavius Bailey, 15 years old, drowned at the Westwood Community Center pool. The sad thing about it, there was five licensed and certified lifeguards on duty at each pool when the two teens drowned.
Hearing of this news, Paragould's Aquatic Center is taking immediate action on their position of pool safety. They have a very strict policy about making sure there is a parent or guardian with young children at all times. They also state that if a child is under 14 they have to have an adult present. For crying out loud, the pool's capacity is at least 586 people!
Here are a few of the obvious pool safety tips and their importance behind them regarding public pools: Diving is not allowed except in a designated spot specifically for diving. Preventative life guarding is practiced. Life guards are trained not just to enforce the rules, but to briefly explain their reason behind them. Constantly be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Also you can seek private swimming lessons if you prefer.
