Various issues discussed at Lepanto's June council meeting

Thursday, July 3, 2008

One of the key points brought up at the Lepanto City Council meeting Tuesday, June 24 was the expansion of Potter Cemetery at the western city limits of the city. Mayor Kevin Wright said he was talking to Tri Watkins who owns the land around the cemetery.

"He doesn't want to sell us anything wet," said Wright. But one of his concerns is that he doesn't want to move his center pivots or any of the other equipment around it."

Wright also said they were hoping to move the driveway farther west away from the entrance which is right next to the bridge entering town. Wright said talks would continue on the issue.

In other business, it was announced that the construction company had received their permits for the Sports Complex and that the workers were digging water lines and disking the fields. The workers were planning to be on the job some 12 to 14 hours each day. As a result, they were looking for temporary housing in the Lepanto area to cut down on their commuting time and to save on gas expense.

Wright also said he needed some input about the police department's budget and especially their fuel costs. It was noted that the actual budget last year was $197,000 whereas the present budget was only $190,000. Also, the fueling budget was set at $18,000. for the year and Wright was hoping to keep it to that or at $1,500. per month.

"Anyone who has suggestions on the police department budget, and ways we can save money needs to call me or come by," said Wright. "That way instead of talking about we can try to get on the same page."

Additionally:

* Wright said he had met with Charles Glover to discuss the situation with the garbage pickup and purchasing the lot in question. He said he would have some information on it by the July meeting.

* Wright announced he had applied for a $378,000. from the USDA for senior citizens housing.

* The mayor also announced that spraying for mosquitoes would begin soon, but added, "when we do, it's going to be more money."
