Be very, very careful this fourth

Thursday, July 3, 2008
Well the Fourth of July is just around the corner! Families are planning their dinners and getting ready to shoot some fireworks. To help you celebrate safely this Fourth of July, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety offer the some safety tips.

Be sure to always read and follow the label directions. Make sure that you have an adult present at all times. Buy fireworks from reliable sellers. Use the fireworks outdoors only, of course. Always have water handy (a garden hose or a bucket near). Never try to experiment or make your own homemade fireworks. Light the fireworks one at a time. Don't try to re-light a "dud" firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water). If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place. Be sure to dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in a trashcan. Never carry fireworks in your pocket. Don't shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework. Stay away from illegal explosives.
