When approaching this building, you can see the world's largest basketball atop of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. This 30-foot tall, 10-ton figure sits above a glass staircase that resembles that of a basketball net. It was definitely a site to see.
Once you're inside, the tour begins at their State Farm Tip-Off Theatre where you watch a video called "Hoopful of Hope." It is a 15-minute emotional journey covering the most of the history of women's basketball. Women's basketball really tipped off at about 1892 with Senda Berenson. The video takes you from there all the way to the WNBA today.
We went on a tour throughout the history of basketball of how it first was for women then and what is for them today. Its not only just about the Tennessee Vols and Coach Pat Summitt. Yes they have some of their trophies and jerseys there, but its about the "history" of all the women's basketball teams. It displays a jersey of Sheryl Swoopes, the first female athlete to have shoes named after her (Air Swoopes).
Also, it displays the All American Red Heads from Caraway. It was a professional female team that competed against men's teams from 1937-1987. The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is the proud owner of their 1965 Pontiac Airporter limousine, which was found in a field in Arkansas. It was purchased for $500 and refurbished in Knoxville for $20,000. The Limousine was rolled in before the building was even completed, so needless to say, it is there to stay!
There is so much more to this exhibit. The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame honors so many female coaches and female basketball players for their outstanding performances over the years. The facility can also be rented and catered for all occasion parties. Such as, wedding receptions, proms and formals, corporate meetings birthday parties, or holiday parties.
The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is so neat to see and the staff there are amazing and very helpful. If you are ever in Knoxville, Tenn., it would be a great place to tour.
