Remembering first day of school jitters

Friday, August 22, 2008
There are a lot of things about being an adult that aren't that much fun. For instance, we have to pay bills and we don't get out for summer vacation. One thing I don't miss about being a kid, though, is the first day of school.

As youngsters hit the busses Monday morning and headed to school for their first day back, I couldn't help but think back to my own first day experiences.

For all girls, the first and most important part of the first day of school was the outfit. A girl could stay up the whole night before deliberating about what she should wear, and how she should wear her hair of course.

There was hair to be crimped and jeans to be tight rolled. (If you're not sure what I'm talking about, then you probably didn't grow up in the 80's!)

Always a little perfectionist, I made sure all my pencils were sharpened with grape scented grippers firmly in place. Everything was neatly organized inside my unicorn trapper keeper and tucked into my pink backpack.

Filled with nervous jitters about what to expect, it was on to the bus, and from there into a whole new world. There were new teachers, new students… new places to sit and new social niches to be carved out on the playground.

You wondered if your best friend was still going to be your best friend that year, if the new gym teacher was really as mean as they say she is and if your crush since first grade will finally realize who you are this year.

It's like each new school year had a life of it's own, filled with new beginnings. Of course, there were always those embarrassing moments from the year before that someone still remembered, but for the most part you got a chance to start with a new slate every year.

I guess it would be nice to do that sometimes as an adult, but still… I don't miss those first day of school jitters!
