Debate on lowering the legal drinking age

Friday, August 29, 2008
In case you have been under a rock lately and haven't heard, there is a national debate going on whether or not to lower the legal drinking age from 21 to 18.

About 100 college and university presidents of around the United States think it would be good. But good for who?

This is exactly what I want to see - a young, inexperienced driver, away from home for the first time in college ,drunk behind the wheel of a car.

Did you know that a recent study estimates more than 500,000 students suffer alcohol

related injuries each year and 1,700 die in alcohol related accidents? The majority of this group is under the age of 25.

On one side, you have the Amethyst Initiative, which began recruiting members about a year ago with the goal of triggering national debate about the drinking age. Ancient Greeks believed amethyst jewelry made people immune to the effects of alcohol.

On the other side, there are groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, civil libertarians, parents, doctors and law enforcement agencies.

The argument the first group wants to debate is if an 18 year old is old enough to vote, fight and die in war, then they should be old enough to drink. They also contend that it would stop a lot of binge drinking on campus.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill that set the national minimum drinking age at 21 because of all the alcohol-related traffic accidents and fatalities in the nation.

In my opinion, lowering the drinking age would result in more alcohol related traffic accidents and deaths. Besides, drinking is just morally wrong. The Bible has many verses stating why it is wrong. These are a few verses which came to mind: Luke 1:15 states "Your son will be a great servant of the Lord. He must never drink wine or beer and the power of the Holy Spirit will be with him from the time he is born." Proverbs 20:1 "It isn't smart to get drunk! Drinking makes a fool of you and leads to fights". Ephesians 5:18 "Don't destroy yourself by getting drunk, but let the Spirit fill your life."

Note just for the record, according to a news report on KAIT, ASU Vice Chancellor Dr. Rick Stripling stated that he does not agree with lowering the legal drinking age. "We find that students at ASU are very responsible and they do take the law very serious", Dr. Stripling told the news channel.
