"What is it with this young generation?" I vented mentally. After collecting all my goodies, the cashier reluctantly check out my products. After she swiped my debit card she basically hurled the pen at me, yearning for the transaction to conclude. And could I even unpack the situation further to inform you that when I asked for a sack, obviously implying to put my stuff in, she handed me the sack to bag it myself.
As I drove off all I could do was mull over why my generation has become so irreverent.
At the risk of sounding like an old man lamenting today's youth I'm going to submit my quarterly quota for venting.
Maybe I am an old soul, but I believe in customer service. But I think this scenario runs far deeper than simple lack of customer service skills, we're evolving into irreverent beings. Think about it. Maybe this is a poorly researched argument, but have you ever seen a president ridiculed like Bush? As I was walking into a retail store one day I noticed you could purchase a calendar marking the number of days Bush had in office. I don't remember such items available when Clinton had his affair. I digress.
What I think has happened to our younger generation is a trickle down effect from parents abandoning responsibility. Instead of conversations over the dinner table, it's a meal revolving around prime time television in total silence. Instead of parents entertaining that maybe their absence caused their children's bad decisions, the blame is thrust upon immoral movies and violent video games. And in a lot of situations, the mother harnesses all the responsibility while the dad checks out, leaving kids psychologically void. I know I'm beating a dead horse, but remember it's my quarterly quota for venting.
Now I will admit that it's more than just parents. Our society has evolved from serving others to selfishness. We want things our way, on our time and nothing less merits acceptance. My generation has become cushioned by getting quality things without the understanding of responsibility. So instead of thinking about respect towards other people, all we care about is ourselves. It's the reason why the earth is falling a part, babies are aborted, reality shows are on the rise and celebrities pitch fits when they aren't getting more of a ridiculous salary than they already have.
So when that crabby youth working in retail acts like they'd rather drink venom then have to wait on you, it's not a matter of lack of training, its matter of disrespect for their own species. My generation is consumed with self and I fear the future world may pay dearly for it. Honestly I wince at the thought of my generation emerging into national leadership. Maybe I'm being dramatic.
