September is National Cancer Awareness Month

Thursday, September 11, 2008

On Aug. 26 President Bush signed a Proclamation stating that September is National Cancer Awareness Month. It is also for awareness of for certain types of cancer such as ovarian/gynecological, prostate, childhood and thyroid.) October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.)

Here are some interesting facts I discovered:

*Each year, thousands of American women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Many will lose their lives because the disease. is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Early detection is the best way to help doctors determine the best treatments.

* Every seven minutes a woman is diagnosed with gynecological cancer.

* Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths.

* The American Cancer Society estimates that each year approximately 25,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed and 14,000 women die.

* The most common form of cancer among men other than skin cancer is prostate cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths after lung cancer and the seventh leading cause of death overall for men in the U.S.

A multi-network cancer telethon that was held in New York on Friday night made over $100 million in donations. One hundred percent of the funds raised will go directly to funding the research programs necessary to battle cancers of all types. Meanwhile, fundraising will continue by various means.

This is something very dear to my heart because Sept. 16, 2004, I lost my grandmother Mary Helen (Person) Holiman to ovarian cancer. I also lost a great aunt, Wanetta (Chambers) Kurts to brain cancer before I was born.

Whether you wear a blue ribbon for prostate cancer, a gold ribbon for childhood cancer, a purple ribbon for thyroid cancer, a teal ribbon for gynecological cancer or a pink ribbon for breast cancer, we need to bring awareness of the importance of early cancer detection .
