Indians plaster Cedar Ridge to go 2-0 in conference play

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Marked Tree led in virtually every category last Friday night as the traveled to Newark and thrashed Cedar Ridge 46-8 in a 2A-3 conference contest. Marked Tree never trailed as they scored all of their points before the Timberwolves ever got on the board early in the final period.

Tight end Ritchie Tate opened the scoring in the first quarter when he went in from 24 yards out on a T. J. Lassiter pass. The play culminated a seven play drive from the 43 where Chris Williams had put his team in business with a block of the Wolves first punt. Tate then followed the score with a successful kick to put Marked Tree up 7-0 at the 7:15 mark.

Minutes later, the Timberwolves set up to punt for a second time and, for a second time had their punt blocked, this time by Earless Coleman at the 20 yard line.

The Indians took little time scoring again as Michael Gray punched in his first TD of the night four plays later, scoring on a three yard run with 3:37 left in the period. Tate's PAT attempt was no good, but Marked Tree was rolling, 13-0.

The first quarter came to an end, but then the second period began Gray went to town. First, with :50 gone in the period, he scored on a 20 yard run to top off a seven play, 42 yard drive. Lassiter hit Tate for the conversion to get the missed point back for a 21-0 lead.

Then at the 5:02 mark the senior speedster scored again on a 40 yard run ending a 60 yard drive. Tate's kick was unsuccessful again.

Finally, Gray got his last yards of the night as he raced in from 56 years out to end the half. Lassiter was sacked on the PAT, but the Indians were up a comfortable 33-0.

Marked Tree scored twice more in the second period, once at the 10:00 mark of the third on a one yard Lassiter run which ended a four play, 59 yard drive. Tate kicked the point good for a 40-0 lead.

The with just over six minutes left in the period, W.C. Tobar recovered a fumble, one of two he had on the night, at the Wolves 11. Two plays later, Quincel Wilson ran in from the seven for the Tribes final points of the game after Tate's kick missed its mark.

With a 46-0 lead, the Indian coaches emptied the bench.

Cedar Ridge finally got on the board with 10:16 left in the game with a 15 yard pass followed by a two-point pass for the conversion. The score set the final margin at 38 points, 46-8.

Gray led Marked Tree averaging over 16 yards per play as he amassed 164 yards on 10 carries while playing only the first half.

Williams finished with 75 yards on seven carries while Carlos Matos had 23 yards on one attempt and Dionte Smith gained eight yards on two rushes.

Lassiter completed seven of 11 passes for 87 yards.
