"I was very pleased with our performance the other night," said coach Matt Wright. "I think I finally found my football team."
Augusta opened the scoring with a 59 yard run from scrimmage just as the first quarter opened to take a 6-0 after the unsuccessful conversion.
The Indians quickly came back, though, to go up 8-6 at 4:15 of the first period on Thadius Moore's 50 yard scamper. Moore then followed the TD up with the conversion to give the Tribe a lead they would never relinquish.
In the second period, Jagger McCrary ended an 11 play drive with a one-yard run to put the Indians up further, 14-6. Bryant Anderson tacked on the two-point play for a 16-6 lead the visitors carried into halftime.
The end of the third period was a wild affair as for the first 6:46 of the period, the score remained the same. But in the last 1:04, the two teams lit up the scoreboard three times.
First, Anderson popped a 22 yard run for a TD and a 22-6 lead after the two point pass failed.
Next, on the kickoff which ensued, August gathered the ball in at the 22 and went the distance to close the gap 22-12 following the unsuccessful conversion attempt.
Finally, Moore once again got into the act with a 56 yard score just before the period came to an end. The conversion again failed, but the Indians had a healthy lead, 28-12.
The final points of the game came when the Devils ran in from 45 yards out with 4:01 remaining in the game for the 28-18 final tally.
Moore led the night with 164 yards on 12 carries while Anderson collected 79 yards on 10 totes and Darius Ivy added 26 yards on three carries.
Defensively, McCrary had an interception while Moore and Tad Wood recovered a fumble apiece.
"We played an outstanding game." concluded Wright. "We ran the ball well, Thadius and Jagger ran the ball well, in fact every back we have ran the ball well. Our line did a good job especially in the first half. We ran right at them and we picked up yards on almost every play.
"The second half, though, we came out and got real relaxed. But part of that is that we haven't had a lot of success and they have to learn out to go out and put an opponent away. The game could have got a lot closer than it was because we didn't put them away. We battled though and hopefully we learned as small bit of how to win.
"But the bottom line is that a win is a win is a win and we're not going to complain."
The Indians will be at home tomorrow (Thursday) night to host the McCrory Jaguars in a 7 p.m. game.
