Gray ran for 474 yards -- the second-highest total in Arkansas high school history, according to the state record book -- to lead the Indians to a 43-40 victory over Augusta on homecoming at Don Lovell Memorial Field.
Gray scored on runs of 50, 65, 14 and 49 yards, plus recovered a fumble that clinched the win in a back-and-forth game.
Gray's 49-yard scoring run and Chris Williams' 2-point conversion run put the Indians up 36-28 with 1:28 left in the third quarter. Augusta answered with back-to-back touchdowns to retake the lead at 40-36, before the Indians' T.J. Laster put his team ahead to stay on a 1-yard TD run with 4:59 to play. Richie Tate's point-after kick made it 43-40.
On the ensuing possession, Augusta drove deep into Marked Tree territory, but the Indians' Greg Johnson forced a fumble and Gray recovered to give the Indians possession. Marked Tree ran off the final minute to seal the win.
Augusta (1-3, 1-2 2A-3) led the entire first half after scoring with 7:11 to go in the opening quarter. Gray's 50-yard touchdown run pulled the Indians within 7-6 midway through the second quarter, before Augusta answered with another touchdown to make it 13-6 with 2:13 left in the half. Laster's 7-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds left in the half made it 13-12 at the break.
Marked Tree (3-1, 3-0) took its first lead of the game on the first play of the second half, Gray's 65-yard TD jaunt. Gray's 2-point conversion made it 20-13.
Augusta tied it two minutes later, before Gray's 14-yard score and a Laster-to-Tate 2-point pass made it 28-20 with 3:54 left in the third quarter. Augusta tied it at the 2:21 mark, but Gray untied it 53 seconds later with his 49-yard TD run that made it 36-28.
Gray's 474 yards rushing ranks second in the state record book published by the Arkansas Activities Association before the 2008-09 school year. John Bunch of Elkins set the record of 608 yards playing against Winslow in 1974. Gray's total surpassed the previous second-place mark of 436 yards set by De'Arrius Howard of West Memphis against Forrest City in 1999.
Laster finished 4-of-6 passing for 50 yards, while Marcus Woodson added a fumble recovery for Marked Tree.
