Wikipedia describes a volunteer as someone who serves in a community or for the benefit of natural environment primarily because they choose to do so. Many serve through a non-profit organization --sometimes referred to as formal volunteering, but a significant number also serve less formally, either individually or as part of a group.
By definition, a volunteer worker does not get paid or receive compensation for services rendered. It is a person who offers their time, energy and expertise to benefit others in their community without any financial gain.

Each person's motivations for volunteering are unique. They may volunteer for the benefit of others. Some people say volunteering helps improve the quality of life by serving the community because doing service makes ones own life better. It may very well be the most significant motivation for volunteering.
Many faiths hold service to others or the community as a spiritual duty or a means of reaching higher spiritual states.
The Holy Bible says, "Do all you can for everyone who deserves your help" Proverbs 3:27 and "Share every good thing you have with anyone who teaches you what God has said" Galatians 6:6
Volunteering is a good way to meet a lot of different people from other walks of life and is often an easy way to meet new friends. The benefits people get from being with others, staying active and above all having a sense of value of ourselves in society that may not be as clear in other areas of life.
Some people say that volunteering is a sense of duty, participating in the community is a responsibility that comes with citizenship.
Without volunteers, what would our communities be like around Terrapin Derby? Stars & Stripes Festivals? Marked Tree Jubilee? Or even the Christmas Parade? Also, let's not forget about our towns' fire departments. They are all volunteer fire fighters.
Whatever the reason may be, get involved, take pride in your community and become a volunteer. The benefits are very rewarding. If you cannot become "involved," go a little easier on those that do. What would we do without them?
