The festivities kicked off on Saturday, Oct. 25 in the church fellowship hall with an old fashioned pot luck luncheon. Former and present pastors, members and friends feasted on the great food and fellowship.
Following the pot luck, old and new choir members gathered for a choir reunion. They enjoyed a great time of reminiscing, getting reacquainted and singing. Also at the choir reunion, minister of music, Scott Burcham, made several presentations. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Marvin Steele, the first choir director of the church's first choir. Several charter choir members were presented certificates as well. On Saturday evening, everyone reconvened for a special celebration in song presented by the mass choir.
A special program on Sunday morning included several special guests. Pastor Patrick Tucker welcomed everyone. He then read a letter of congratulations from the church's state administrative bishop, Les Higgins. Pastor Tucker added what a special privilege it is for him and his wife Angela to pastor their "home church."
Following the pastor's welcome and a time of fellowship, the reunion choir presented several musical selections, including a solo by Martha Howard. Two beloved former pastors, Rev. Raymond Pedigo, who pastored the church from 1956 to 1966 and Rev. William P. "Danny" Colter, who pastored the church from 1966 to 1975, made remarks to the congregation.
The church's rich heritage was also celebrated on Sunday morning. A video presentation about the church's history was narrated by Zack Tucker. Then Louise Pace Richardson, who has compiled the book "The History of the Church of God in Arkansas," added further comments. Richardson is a former long-time state secretary for the church.
In addition to the church's history, the church's rich musical heritage was highlighted also. A plaque was presented to the Perkins family for their musical contributions to the church throughout the years. Ginger Perkins Tacker accepted the plaque for her family. Tacker, her sister, the late Sandra Green, and their mother, the late Gladys Perkins, made up a trio that was often sought after to sing in church services and civic events.
Other musical talent birthed in the church was on hand for the celebration as well. Surprise visitors Dean and Mary Brown, often seen on VTN, graciously blessed the gatherers with a song. Mary is from Tyronza, the daughter of Melvin and Lillian Young, and was raised in the church. Much of her family still attends regularly.
The anniversary celebration was enjoyed by all. Pastor Tucker thanked everyone for coming and sent them on their way with blessings.
